From its single eye -- a stain glass picture window -- it watches over North Beach's historic Grant St. where Beat poets still roam. From its stained walls covered in large oil paintings to its long spitoon-lined oak bar and high ceilings, it bespeaks magic. Built in 1863 and having survived the Great Earthquake of 1906, it was once a Gold Rush brothel. This tiny bar with its small and somewhat unsteady wooden stage has supported heavy-weights such as Janis Joplin, John Lee Hooker, and Mike Bloomfield. Its glory days are not over. Rising blues stars appear nightly, and you never know who might pop in. Paul Kantner often has a drink on Sunday afternoons and politician Willie Brown. Its owner, a slender, nondescript Chinese-American man named Myron Mu is well-known for his unflailing support of many a struggling musician. The Saloon stands as a testament to the survival of a very American genre--the blues.
